How to maintain your steam appliance.

Your steam appliance will need to be cleaned on a regular basis.  Failure to maintain your unit can lead to blockages from the build up of scale.  Emptying the boiler of the water left from previous operation before refilling will mean that you will not have to descale as often.

1. Cleaning deposits from the boiler

Note: The use of demineralised or filtered water, (NOT distilled), will reduce the need to regularly clean the boiler.

Normally, a periodic rinse of your steam cleaner will free it from deposits. This is recommended every 10 fills to free up any scale deposits from the boiler.

Fill the boiler with water and swirl the cleaner in a circular motion. If your cleaner has a drain plug underneath, flush the water though.  Otherwise, tilt the cleaner upside down to empty the boiler of water and any soil deposits.

2. Descaling the boiler:
As scale builds up on the sides of the boiler you must descale your steam cleaner at the following intervals:
Water Hardness       Descale every:
   Soft                           50 fills
   Medium                      45 fills
   Hard                          30 fills
   Very Hard                   20 fills

3. Descaling Directions
Fill the boiler with 1 part cleaning/white vinegar and 5 parts water (only suitable when unit has external element) or if available use a suitable descaling solution.
   Close Filler Cap.
Heat the boiler until the steam ready lamp glows.
Release steam through the steam gun for a period of 2 minutes.
Switch OFF and unplug the steam cleaner and leave the descaling mixture in the boiler overnight or for a period of around 8 hours.
Remove Boiler Drain Plug and/or remove Filler Cap
   Drain the water.
Flush/rinse the boiler to remove all traces of the descaler.
Firmly refit the Boiler Drain Plug/Filler Cap to complete the job.

Do not use the steam cleaner for cleaning while descaling solution is inside the boiler.

4. Cleaning the Tools
If the tools are being used without a cloth, dirt and grime might build up between the bristles.  To clean simply immerse the tool in a suitable sized container half filled with water with a drop of dish washing detergent.  Blow steam through the tool and into the water.

5. Cleaning Towelling Cloths
Used cloths can be cleaned over and over again in either hot or warm water and dried in a tumble dryer or on a cloths line.
To avoid greying of other clothes wash heavily soiled cloths separately in hot water with a enzyme laundry powder.
The use of fabric conditioner will impair the cloths ability to pick up dirt and should be avoided.
